I’m Starting a Revolution

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]I can’t believe I’ve lived in Austin almost a year.

My boyfriend and I set our sites on the city of weird after a spontaneous weekend trip. Austin struck a chord with us as a great place for him to start a law career (UT has a killer program) and for me to grow The Peahen (there’s a strong appetite for green living and entrepreneurship here). After we moved, I got plugged into the ethical fashion community, mainly to grow my business and, okay, because I needed some friends! Turns out, it was easy because the community is niche and incredibly inclusive.

Eventually, I landed among a crew that includes fair trade advocates, brand owners, designers, and creatives, a few of whom I organized a panel with [here]. The more involved I got, the more I realized that Austin was ready for the next phase of ethical fashion. There were already so many untapped brands and voices here [see our city guide], I thought it was time to tie them to a larger cause.

I wanted to get Austinites more engaged with their homegrown brands and inspire them to start thinking about the impact of their clothes like they do food.

So, I joined forces with two partners to make it happen. Fashion Revolution ATX was born. Through our events, We are bringing Austin’s voice to the global movement that’s changing the way clothes are sourced, produced and purchased. However, instead of focusing on one day, we decided to do an entire month of events this April.

To start, we’re holding ‘Feature Weekends’ that encourage participants to complete punch card tasks at local brands and stores. Afterward,  we join the global movement on April 24th for the main event. Attendees will share what they learned about ethical fashion and participate in discussions led by community influencers. We will also have a photo booth where Austinites can turn their clothes inside out and challenge brands they love by asking

If you’re in Austin, we hope you’ll join us in the city’s first movement. You can pick up your punch card at any of the participating stores, or download it below. If you’re elsewhere, I encourage you to read up about the Rana Plaza factory collapse, learn what Fashion Revolution Day stands for, and see if your city is hosting an event.
